A Case Of You - Joni Mitchell
Oh you are in my blood like holy wine
Oh and you taste so bitter but you taste so sweet
Oh I could drink a case of youI could drink a case of you darling
And I would still be on my feet
Oh Id still be on my feet
------ A Case Of You, Joni Mitchell, Blue
Joni Mitchell's A Case of You is the song that I probably played everyday in the past 2 months. This song is the 9th track of the album Blue. More blue than the tittle were the lyrics and the music. The entire album is like a perfect storytelling of a darker side of someone's heart full of pain. In a 1979 Rolling Stone interview with Cameron Crowe, Mitchell said of Blue:
There’s hardly a dishonest note in the vocals. At that period of my life, I had no personal defenses. I felt like a cellophane wrapper on a pack of cigarettes. I felt like I had absolutely no secrets from the world and I couldn’t pretend in my life to be strong. Or to be happy. But the advantage of it in the music was that there were no defenses there either.
A Case of You represents a love song, about being in love and don't get drowned, a love that still give you sanity to feel the sweet and the bitter of love itself.
The song is now turns 41 but never tastes old. For me, the song sounds as fresh as the freshest morning breeze can be. When you go through it's lines you will find yourself as gloomy as the dark begin to fill the night. And if you liked the more recent rendition of the song it was from James Blake, please take a look:
There are stories over the years trying to find out who is the You in a case of you. The guesses many goes to James Taylor or the songwriter David Blue, or Graham Nash that had recently split with her. Many believed it was Leonard Cohen. Joni and Cohen was briefly involved and said that the words Devil, holy wine, and the "touching souls were the trails of Cohen. A Case of You also Leonard Cohen's second favorite song after a George Jones and before a Dylan track in his jukebox.
And I don't really care. For me a song is a song, white as papers and holy as angels.
